Magnet :

Magnet is a substance that attract iron or iron like substance.

Properties of Magnet

1) every Magnet has two poles.
2) like poles repel each other's.
3) unlike pole attract each other's
4) A freely suspend Magnet align itself in North South direction, with its North Pole toward the North direction.

Magnetic field

The area around a Magnet in which its magnetic force can be expirenced.
  • Its SI unit is tesla.
  • Magnet field has both. magnitude and direction.
  •  Magnetic can be described with help of a magnetic compass.
  • The needle of a compass is free suspended Magnet.

Characteristics of field lines

  • Field line start from North Pole of a bar Magnet and end into the South Pole of a bar Magnet.
  •  The field lines are closed curves.

Magnetic field lines of a bar magnet

Right hand thumb rule

Imagine you are holding a current carrying straight conductors in your right hand such that thumb pointing toward the direction of current. Then the finger wrapped around the conductor will give the direction of magnetic field.
